BEYOND THE LIKE BUTTON: WHY EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS TO STOP "RENTING" THEIR AUDIENCE

John R Ramos • March 19, 2026

Let’s be real for a minute. The hustle on social media is exhausting.

We all do it. We spend time crafting the perfect post for Facebook, we find the right sounds for a Reel on Instagram, and we jump into groups, trying to show up, be useful, and get seen.

And when we get a post that takes off, when the "likes" and comments start rolling in, it feels good. It feels like progress.

But I have a hard question for you (and it’s one I had to ask myself not too long ago):

If your favorite social media platform disappeared tomorrow, how would you reach those people again? 😰

If your answer is a long silence or a spike in anxiety, you aren’t alone. But it means you are building your business on "rented land."

The Digital Landlord Problem

When we focus all our energy on building a following on social media, we are essentially building someone else's platform. We are the "digital tenants," and the social media conglomerates are the "digital landlords."

And landlords can change the rules.

They can tweak the algorithm overnight, crushing the reach of your best posts. 📉

They can change the business model, forcing you to "pay-to-play."

They can, though it’s rare, simply shutter the platform (remember MySpace, or even the original Google+?).

When that happens, you lose access to the very audience you worked so hard to build. All those educational connections, those trust-building conversations, and that potential local networking… poof.

The Solution: Start Building Your "Home" 🏡

The alternative isn't to abandon social media. These platforms are incredibly powerful tools for discovery, connection, and learning (especially locally!). I love jumping into our community groups and learning what people are working on.

The shift is the goal of your social media activity.

Instead of just collecting "likes," focus on inviting people off the noisy digital street and into your digital home: your email list.

Your email list is your own property. It is an asset you fully control.

Two men are working on a laptop and pointing at the screen.

Why Your List is "Algorithm-Proof"

1. Visual authority

When your infographic is clean, on-brand, and rich in meaningful insight, you demonstrate you’re not just a “me too” business—you *know* your stuff.

*Tip*: Use your aerial/video style to create a short lead-in clip, then embed the infographic in your email or blog as a “download the full visual” asset.

When you have a customer's email address (because you asked for it politely and they happily gave it to you in exchange for real value!). You are no longer at the mercy of an algorithm to make a connection.

You have a direct line. You can:

Continuing Teaching: Send in-depth, valuable tutorials or lessons that are too long for a post.

Deepen the Bond: Create a 1-on-1 feeling that you simply cannot get in a public comment thread.

Promote Securely: When you have a new course or service that solves a massive problem your audience has, you can tell them directly, without worrying that 90% of them will miss the message.

Here is the Challenge

You don't need a fancy system to start. This week, make one small change to how you approach your posts or networking:

Instead of ending with "Like this post," try ending with a question and a specific invitation.

Example:

“Which of these platforms are you using the most today? Facebook, Instagram, TikTok “.

I’ve written a brief guide on how I use that exact tool to get off the content hamster wheel. Drop a comment, and I'll send you the link!

That simple shift moves you from "renter" to "future owner."

Stop chasing likes and start building a community you can reach.

What’s your biggest hurdle when it comes to starting or growing your list? I’d genuinely love to know. Let's talk about it in the comments or shoot me an email.

1. Boosts SEO and Online Visibility
By john May 3, 2023
In a recent post, I wrote about ten reasons a business needs an updated website. In this post, I would like to elaborate a little bit more as to why you should consider my suggestion(s). As an email marketing specialist and content writer for small to medium-sized businesses, I want to talk to you about something super important for your website: optimizing it for mobile devices. Nowadays, almost everyone uses their smartphones and tablets to browse the internet. That's why having a website that is mobile-friendly is so crucial. It provides a better user experience and can improve your search engine rankings, making it easier for potential customers to find your site. A responsive design is one way to ensure your website is mobile-friendly. . This means your site's layout and content automatically adjust to fit any device’s screen size. Pretty cool, right? Another way to optimize your site for mobile is by optimizing images. Large images can slow down your site's load time, which can be frustrating for mobile users. So, compress images and reduce their file size without sacrificing quality. Simplifying navigation is another crucial factor for mobile optimization. Use clear, concise labels for your menus, and make sure they're easy to access from any device. This can help mobile users find what they're looking for quickly and easily. Testing your website on multiple devices is also a good idea. This will help you identify any issues that must be addressed to ensure your site looks and functions nicely across all devices. Lastly, prioritize speed. Mobile users expect websites to load quickly, so minimizing the use of large images and videos, using browser caching, and compressing your code can all help reduce your site's load time. . So, there you have it! Optimizing your website for mobile devices is essential for providing a positive user experience, improving search engine rankings, and driving conversions and sales. As an email marketing specialist and content writer for small to medium-sized businesses, I encourage you to consider these tips and make sure your website is optimized for mobile. . Your competitors may have updated their websites, which can make your site look outdated in comparison. Updating your website can help to ensure that you stay competitive and that your business stays relevant in today's digital landscape.
